A Landmark Development: Upgradation of Probation and Parole Officer Post to BS-17

The Punjab Probation and Parole Service (PP&PS), Home Department, Government of the Punjab, has achieved a significant institutional milestone with the upgradation of the post of Probation and Parole Officer from BS-16 to BS-17, following the approval of the Provincial Cabinet in its 24th meeting held on 27th March 2025.

This long-awaited development reflects the provincial government’s recognition of the critical role played by Probation and Parole Officers in the criminal justice system. It aligns with the broader strategy of strengthening non-custodial measures and promoting rehabilitative justice across the province.

The upgraded status is expected to substantially improve operational effectiveness in the field, enhancing both the authority and motivation of officers. With better service terms, the department anticipates a significant reduction in attrition, enabling the retention of experienced professionals and attracting qualified talent to the service.

This decision has also contributed to streamlining the promotion structure within the department, establishing a clearer and more merit-based career progression framework. The reform is a step toward institutional sustainability, ensuring that the department can continue to meet its rehabilitative and supervisory responsibilities effectively.

The Punjab Probation and Parole Service remains committed to advancing progressive, community-based correctional practices. The upgradation of officers is not only a recognition of past efforts but also a foundation for achieving higher standards of professionalism, accountability, and impact in the years to come.
