The journey of Muhammad Pervaiz Iqbal is one of immense determination and transformation. Placed on probation after facing significant personal and medical challenges, his story exemplifies the power of rehabilitation and the unwavering support provided by the Punjab Probation and Parole Service.
Life Before Probation
Muhammad Pervaiz Iqbal was placed on probation by the honorable court of Mr. Muhammad Ashaq, District and Session Judge, Khushab. Prior to the incident leading to his probation, Pervaiz was a healthy, active man working as a vegetable shopkeeper in his community. However, during the court proceedings on 15th January 2024, he unexpectedly suffered from paralysis (Falij), affecting the left side of his body, including his arm and leg. This sudden health setback significantly altered his life, leaving him dependent on others for mobility. Despite these physical challenges, Pervaiz remained a devoted father to a son and a daughter, and his father, an army personnel, had always been a source of strength in his life. Before his illness, Pervaiz was known for his good health and vibrant personality.
Support from the Probation Officer
As a probation officer, I identified that while Pervaiz was receiving medical treatment from a private physician, his recovery could be enhanced through a structured physical rehabilitation program. I focused on guiding him through exercises that would target nerve improvement and physical mobility. These exercises included:
- Walking and running to build his stamina.
- Opening and closing of the left hand to improve dexterity.
- Weight lifting using a one-liter water bottle, gradually increasing to a 2.5-liter bottle.
- Cycling to strengthen his leg muscles.
- Hand grip exercises to regain strength in his hand.
Through these consistent efforts, I aimed to help Pervaiz regain as much independence as possible and improve his quality of life.
Challenges Encountered and Solutions
While Pervaiz faced significant physical challenges, there were other obstacles along the way. The rise of media and social media often led to confusion between genuine medical knowledge and misguided information, complicating his treatment process. However, through focused counseling and guidance, I helped him understand the importance of a holistic approach to health, emphasizing the relationship between healing, the healer, and the patient.
Additionally, one of the major hurdles was Pervaiz’s reintegration into society due to his physical limitations. Finding appropriate employment and dealing with societal perceptions about his condition was a challenge. However, by motivating him and focusing on his rehabilitation, we were able to make gradual improvements.
Steps Taken for Improvement and Reintegration
As a result of his consistent effort and the structured rehabilitation program, Pervaiz’s condition showed remarkable progress. His walking ability improved significantly, and his left hand’s mobility also showed gradual improvement. Although his hand grip strength was still not at the desired level, the progress made in his physical rehabilitation was a source of encouragement.
The remaining challenge for Pervaiz is securing stable employment. While he has made progress in his physical health, unemployment remains an obstacle, but it is not an insurmountable one. With continued support and a focus on rebuilding his life, I believe that Pervaiz will overcome this challenge in the near future.
Advice for Others on Probation/Parole
The key to successful rehabilitation and reintegration lies in following the guidance and instructions of the probation officer. Consistency, self-discipline, and a positive mindset are crucial in overcoming challenges. For probationers, it is essential to stay motivated and take part in rehabilitation programs to improve their physical and mental health.
Conclusion
Muhammad Pervaiz Iqbal’s journey demonstrates that with the right support and effort, individuals can overcome significant obstacles and reintegrate into society. His success story reflects the positive impact of structured rehabilitation, the dedication of probation officers, and the resilience of individuals who are determined to change their lives.
The Punjab Probation and Parole Service continues to stand as a beacon of hope, offering individuals like Pervaiz a second chance at life and reintegration into society.
